Today I had Junior Kindergartens in the library. These girls have a lot of energy and love to share their weekend stories. But most of all, they love a good picture book. As I have never taught kindergarten before, it took me a while to decide on the book I wanted to share with the students today. Some of the prerequisites I had:
- short sentences
- repetitive sentences
- relatable story
When I picked up a copy of I Don’t Want to Go To School! by Stephanie Blake a couple of weeks ago at the bookstore, I knew I had a special book in my hands. Simon the Super Rabbit! does not want to go to school: No Way! Every thing is mom and dad says to him results in him answering: No Way!
The simple pictures show Simon’s anxiety about this new event in his life. The girls recognized their nervousness about going to school in the pictures and the events leading up to going to school. At the end of the story, when Simon’s mom comes to pick him, does he want to go home? The girls all shouted: “No Way!”
Would I recommend this book for a read aloud? YES WAY!
